JOHANNESBURG – The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (Outa) has questioned whether South African National Roads Agency Limited’s (Sanral) security systems are adequate, as more details emerge around a new credit card scam, sing the roads agency’s name as a reference.
Sanral has assured motorists that it has nothing to do with the scam and that the banks are taking care of the problem. Gauteng motorists have complained that large amounts of money were deducted from their credit cards this week.
The roads agency says the company’s security has not been compromised. But Outa’s Wayne Duvenage says it’s worrying.
“Is their system as secure, I’m not too sure; Sanral might say so but let’s see? Certainly this whole thing around fear around tolls gives an opportunity for scammers to get involved and make a quick buck. That’s an unfortunate situation.”
