Cape Town - A paramedic is expected to appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court on Monday for hijacking an ambulance outside a fire station in the area and robbing a fellow paramedic who was in it.

Another suspect is yet to be arrested. Metro EMS spokesman Robert Daniels said he was aware of the incident and it was under investigation. But he was not able to say whether the arrested paramedic, 31, who handed himself over to police on Saturday, or the one who was robbed, worked for Metro EMS.

These details would be clarified on Monday. The paramedic who handed himself over to police was from Khayelitsha, but worked in Mitchells Plain. He faces an armed robbery charge.

Police spokeswoman Constable Noloyiso Rwexana said the hijacking happened at 11pm on Friday. She said an ambulance, with two paramedics who were treating a patient inside it, was parked in front of the fire station in Khayelitsha.

Two men, armed with knives, jumped into the ambulance. “The driver of the ambulance fought back and managed to escape to get assistance,” Rwexana said. It is understood the patient who was being treated also managed to escape. The two knifemen then drove the ambulance with the remaining paramedic in it.

They drove it to another section of Khayelitsha before stopping. “(The knifemen) robbed the remaining paramedic of her cellphones before fleeing from the scene.”

Once the robbers had run away, the remaining paramedic managed to drive the ambulance back to the fire station and reported the incident to police.
