MY Heart Will Go On songstress Celine Dion’s husband Rene Angelil has reportedly died away after a 17 year battle with throat cancer.
Angelil, 73, was diagnosed with throat cancer in 1998, but died in their Las Vegas home on Thursday.
The couple met in 1981 when Dion was just 12 and Angelil was 38. He became her manager before they eventually married in 1994. He is survived by his three sons with Dion — René-Charles, 14, and 5-year-old fraternal twins Nelson and Eddy.
He also has three children from a previous relationship — Patrick, Jean-Pierre and Anne-Marie.
The Clark County Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner said in a statement to PEOPLE maagazine that he had died from natural causes. No further investigations into his death are expected.
Celine, 47, has talked around her husband’s illness, telling USA today that he had wanted to die in her arms.
“Rene says to me, ‘I want to die in your arms.’ OK ... I’ll be there, you’ll die in my arms,” she said.
“All my grieving, it was during this last year. I think I’ve got this. For now. When it hits me, it’s going to hit me. But my biggest job is to tell my husband, we’re fine. I’ll take care of our kids. You’ll watch us from another spot.”
Celine also shared their pain at not knowing when he would lose his battle with cancer. “We have asked (doctors) many times, how long does he have, three weeks, three months? Rene wants to know. But they say they don’t know,” she said.
She said their eldest son, Rene-Charles is becoming the “man of my life” but he found it difficult to see his father in such poor health.
But their twins “don’t know their father in any other state.”
Celine previously took a break from her Las Vegas residency and career in 2014 to care for Rene.
In an interview with E!, Celine said she had to feed Rene three times a day as he couldn’t use his mouth.
“He can’t eat, so I feed him,” she said.
